HotTub Heater Guide
The right hot tub heater is arguably the most important single part of your whole hot tub. A larger heater will heat your water faster and a smaller heater will heat your water slower. I don't think THAT'S too hard to wrap our brains around! Many times when you purchase your hot tub, you won't really have a choice of heater. But over the years, heaters wear out. You will almost certainly, at some time or another, have to buy a new heater. And when you do it's a good idea to know exactly what you're getting yourself into.
Even if your hot tub heater doesn't wear out, you may simply change your mind and want a different or better one! Preferences change with everything in our world, why not with heaters?! Not to fear though, you've come to the right place to learn all there is to know about hot tub heaters, from the type, to the size, to the power and everything in between.
Types of Hot Tub Heaters: hot tub heaters generally come in to major types. Those two types are electric and natural gas. There are also solar powered hot tub heaters but I will tend to spend less time talking about them because I think they're not worth talking about since you need to live in a place that has lots and lots (and I mean LOTS) of what they call unencumbered sunlight (of course, if you DO live in such an area, these heaters can reduce your energy costs down to virtually zero). Old (or older) hot tubs many times have energy guzzling, highly inefficient heaters than can really cost you an arm and a leg over time in electricity or natural gas fees.
Whether to go with a natural gas heater or an electric heater often also comes down to the location in which you live. Some places don't offer natural gas or don't offer it cheaply. Which is better? Well that's really hard to say. There are pros and cons for each side and really it often just comes down to opinion. Ask a specialist in your area and they can tell you themselves what people usually get where you live (remember, it often comes down to location since electricity and natural gas prices vary by location).
Usage Behavior is important!: How will you use your hot tub? Do you wish to flip a switch and jump in, expecting it to be hot right away? If so, you're definitely going to need a larger and more expensive heater! If you are the kind of person that knows before hand when you are most likely to use it (say you soak every night after work), then you can buy a smaller heater and set it on a timer to heat up before hand so that when you climb in the water is right at the hot temperature that you want.
One thing I will mention...I talked a bit about needed to replace an old worn out heater. If this is the case, I highly recommend you hire a specialist or at least a contractor with hot tub experience to replace your heater for you. Wiring can get tricky and especially if its hooked up to natural gas, you don't want to make any mistakes that can cause serious injury. So hire a professional to take care of any heater installation needs.
